What is corrosion?

According to the International Concrete Repair Institute, corrosion of steel-reinforced concrete is defined as the destruction of metal by the chemical, electrochemical, and electrolytic reaction within its environment. Corrosion is dangerous as it can lead to a loss in the mechanical properties of the metal, causing structural failure.

Concrete needs protection from corrosion

There are three causes of corrosion that weakens steel-reinforced concrete structures. Each cause involves different compounds in the corrosion process, and they are:

Water and oxygen for the oxidation process.
Chlorides for chloride corrosion.
Carbon dioxide in the air for carbonation.

As these compounds naturally occur in the environment the structure is built-in, concrete should be protected from these compounds when it is first placed and maintained throughout the structure's life cycle to ensure the strength and durability of concrete.
